Week Four – Thursday

“Say Something Nice”

My mother always said, “if you can’t say something nice then don’t say anything at all.” Your’s Probably did as well. Only, my mother was really direct and would more often say, “if you don’t have something nice to say, then shut your mouth.” She always meant what she said. Truth is, his was a wise statement and when I listened kept me out of much trouble.

It’s also biblical. Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” We should be careful of what we say. When we speak things that are negative, unkind, or thoughtless, we plant seeds that will certainly reap an undesirable harvest. Paul lets us know that if we speak it should only be things that build up and give grace to those listening.

He goes on to say, “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.” It’s more than just our speech because what we speak only reveals our hearts. The word says, “Out of an abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” These negative emotions and feelings left unbridled, will cause us to stir up problems and animosity. We are left feeling empty and cannot see the goodness of God. We become ungrateful because of whatever issues we have.

This is why it’s so important to refocus our thoughts. Looking at everything through the eyes of the Holy Spirit. Paul says, “be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God.” We’ve heard that before. Letting our minds be renewed and having the mind of Christ is a daily decision to crucify our flesh (take up your cross) and follow Jesus (obey His word). What things in your life could be less burdensome by allowing your mindset to be changed? What things have you been speaking that are not beneficial to you or those around you?

Today’s Prayer

Father, help me to see the areas I’ve neglected to allow you to change. Let your Word wash over my mind and help me to not speak idle words that are negative. Let me guard my speech and let my words be those that bring glory and honor to you. Thank you for helping me to be made new each day. In Jesus Name, Amen.
